Why would a Layer 2 switch need an IP address?

A Layer 2 switch requires an IP address primarily to facilitate remote management. This capability allows network administrators to access the switch's management interface from a different location, using protocols like SSH, Telnet, or a web-based interface. This is especially useful in larger network environments where physical access to the switch is not feasible or is inconvenient.

While local configuration of the switch can be performed without an IP address, having an IP address significantly enhances the management capabilities. It allows for monitoring, configuration changes, and troubleshooting to be executed from a networked computer instead of directly at the device, saving time and effort.

The options regarding internet access and enhancing speed are not applicable to the necessity of an IP address for a Layer 2 switch. Layer 2 switches operate at the data link layer and do not provide routing capabilities or direct internet connectivity. Speed enhancements are generally achieved through technology such as faster interfaces or protocols rather than through the assignment of an IP address.
